20 February 2002 I was pleased to hear about your Commonwealth "Youth for the Future" initiative that is being proposed by your government as a new way of harnessing the energy and vitality of the Commonwealth's younger generation. I have noted with pleasure that this proposal was discussed at length by representatives of Commonwealth countries at the Australia House in Laudon, where the initiative was given widespread support. I believe that this initiative will make it possible for a larger number of the Commonwealth's younger generation to dedicate their characteristic energy and commitment to undertake valuable voluntary work, thereby exposing themselves to the cherished values of the Commonwealth. Whilst wishing you every success for the launch of this initiative I would like to reassure you that my country will seek to play a meaningful part in its future function.
