Fact Sheet: What is the CHOGM?

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is convened every two years, and centres on formal and informal meetings of the Heads of Government of Commonwealth nations. The aim is to develop through consensus common positions on issues of importance to Commonwealth countries. A key feature of the meeting is the opportunity during the Retreat for national leaders to discuss international issues of common concern frankly and directly through personal interaction, without officials and advisers in attendance.

CHOGM 2002

This year's CHOGM will be a significant international event. This biennial Heads of Government meeting will be held from 2-5 March 2002 in Coolum. The theme "Commonwealth in the 21st Century: Continuity and Renewal" provides a preview to the issues which will be discussed. The Commonwealth will be looking very closely at how it can best respond to the challenges of this century. Proposed reforms which leaders will consider will be aimed at ensuring the Commonwealth remains modern, relevant and deals with the "real issues" facing its members today.
