Fact Sheet: The Commonwealth
and Youth
Commonwealth leaders recognise the vital role that young people
play in fostering international understanding and commitment to
the Commonwealth's fundamental values of democracy and good governance.
The challenge is to enlist the enthusiasm of youth for the Commonwealth
in the new century.
The Commonwealth already has a specific focus on youth. The Commonwealth
Youth Program promotes development of young people by encouraging
youth participation in national development and an active youth
voice in the economic, social and cultural development of their
countries. But youth can also make a greater practical contribution
to development across the Commonwealth. We expect this year's CHOGM
will have a number of particular recommendations regarding strengthened
engagement of youth in the Commonwealth that are likely to arise
from the review of Commonwealth activities currently being undertaken.
The Commonwealth Youth Forum, from 30 September - 7 October 2001,
aimed to mobilise youth in support of central Commonwealth objectives
of good governance and democracy, sustainable economic and social
development and the rule of law. Its theme "A new Generation:
the role of young people in the Commonwealth in the 21st Century"
focused on the need to address specific issues of concern to young
people and to encourage participants to promote home-based community
action plans on their return. It included 2 youths from 52 overseas
countries (104) plus approximately 30 young Australians plus several
facilitators (ie up to 150 attendees).
