Protocol & Security

Throughout the rich 30-year history of CHOGMs, protocol and customs specific to the biennial summits have evolved. While each CHOGM host nation is able to inject some of its local hospitality and culture, there are certain aspects which have not changed.

For example, CHOGM customs include:

  • The flags of all Commonwealth nations are displayed at the Opening Ceremony on day one of CHOGM.

  • An official group photograph of the Heads of Delegation is taken immediately after the Opening Ceremony.

  • The Royal Household arranges for a separate group photograph of the Heads of Delegation with Her Majesty The Queen to be taken during a banquet hosted by The Queen on the evening of day one.

  • Official programmes indicate dress codes for each function and national dress can be worn on any occasion.

  • The Commonwealth Mace is displayed in meetings of Commonwealth Heads of Government and on other formal occasions.
